IV Program for Nurses and Techs

The use of dynamic ultrasound guidance to place IV’s has been shown to greatly increase first-attempt success in patients with difficult IV access. However, despite the ability to improve patient care, training programs have traditionally been advertised only to physician providers, often times excluding key members of the interprofessional team (i.e., ED nurses and technicians). Started in 2016, our Ultrasound Guided IV training program is a collaborative effort between the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Nursing. By identifying and empowering ED nurse champions, we have developed as “train-the-trainer” program dedicated to improving patient care and throughput in the ED through successful and timely IV placement.
